Community of Bluff Burns Two Giant Great Blue Heron Sculptures to Celebrate Winter Solstice

In the center of the town of Bluff on Wednesday morning, two sculptures of great blue herons stood over 30 feet tall in a huge nest, made almost entirely from willow branches and sage.  They took over 50 people 71 days to build. That night, the sculptures were set aflame. They took only about 20 minutes to burn to the ground.

Artist and designer Joe Pachak says he burned the sculptures as effigies in celebration of the Winter Solstice, and to mark the temporary nature of all things.  KSJD's Austin Cope went to Bluff to see this event, and had a conversation with Pachack before the fire started.
