The 176,000-acre Canyons of the Ancients National Monument lies just west of Cortez. It protects the largest density of archeological sites in the country. But in addition to protecting archaeological sites, the Bureau of Land Management must balance multiple uses on the land, including recreation, resource extraction, and agriculture.
