Heavy mountain snow, bitter cold grip region before weekend warmup

Ways To Subscribe

Snow continues this morning across the high country, with the heaviest accumulations along Highway 550 in the northern San Juans, where winter driving conditions are ongoing. Some areas of the San Juans have already picked up more than a foot of snow, and while snowfall will taper off through the morning, light snow and flurries may linger in the high mountains into the afternoon before ending by sunset.

Much colder air moves in behind this system, and today will feel more like mid-January, with temperatures well below normal and cold conditions lasting into Saturday. Tonight will be especially cold, with well below zero temperatures expected in the Gunnison Basin and surrounding cold valleys.

Looking ahead, skies clear and dry weather settles in this weekend, with temperatures gradually warming. Milder conditions are expected to continue into next week, though a few weak systems could bring light mountain snow by midweek.
